Transition into Vintage

Turn back time; this week, in honor of Madison Avenue Watch Week, we’re going vintage. Vintage watch styles are making a huge comeback, especially with the watches you’ll find in our store. In the past few years more and more men have been vying for an old – but fashionable – timepiece; they want something that has style and class but also holds memories. This is totally opposite from the expensive style of pursuit and luxury.

But, just because these watches are older in age does not make them any cheaper in price! These vintage tickers can be high-maintenance which leaves everyone asking for a something more efficient. This demand is leading modern watch-makers to solving everyone’s vintage watch deprivation.

Centuries old British Luxury Brand favored by Asprey created the Vintage Regulator. It takes inspiration from the company’s 1930 regulator clocks. With a white gold face, blue hands and an alligator strap, this watch is perfect for any man searching for their “Grandfather’s clock.”

Another classic piece of jewelry which is a symbol of age and wealth may be taking some money out of our pockets and replacing it with something else – a pocket watch. Yes, these are coming back into style as well. IWC Schaffhausen’s Portuguese Hand-wound 5454 is a replica of a 70 year old line comprised of pocket-watch style wristwatches. The sapphire crystal front, black face, and black strap are all about the classic masculine feel.

We had the pleasure of getting in a few beautiful vintage watches ourselves.  This beautiful Cartier features a bright blue fabric band and diamond encrusted white gold face that screams vintage glamour.

A vintage favorite, the pocket watch, is a timeless male look that will never go out of style.  Though there are beautiful modern takes on this old-school look, we still appreciate the splendor and distinctiveness of one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.  Some of our favorites that we have gotten the chance to restore to their original brilliance are a true rarities with beautiful hand painting, inscriptions and intricate clock detailing.

Whichever kind of vintage watch you are looking for, it’s out there! You don’t have to rummage through your grandfather’s old jewelry or visit a wide range of antique stores to find it. You can get a new vintage watch without the maintenance price!

Remember: vintage is in. So visit George Press in Livingston, NJ to embrace the style.

Jewels of Elizabeth Taylor

As we all know legendary actress and AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor passed away this last week. She will be remembered by her beauty, acting career, humanitarian work, multiple marriages, but also for her fabulous jewelry collection.

Taylor’s collection, which Gem Experts value at $150 million, was comprised of elegant diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, was said to all have been gifts from the various men in her life (go tell that to your husbands ladies!).

Her fifth husband, Richard Burton loved showering his wife with gifts. One of her most talked about diamonds that she wore every day was the 33.19 carat Krupp diamond engagement ring, which was Burton’s first jewelry purchase for Taylor in 1968.

In her book My Love Affair with Jewelry she talks about her beautiful collection, of course not to brag but to share the love. She said “I knew that I wanted to give others a glimpse of the thrills and pure happiness that these beautiful creations have given me.” Thank you Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor!

Some of Mrs. Taylor’s notable pieces include:

This pear shaped 69.42 carat Burton-Taylor diamond, given to her by Richard Burton in 1969, one of the most famous jewels in history.

This diamond tiara was on of Elizabeth Taylor’s more regal pieces given to her in 1957 by her third husband, Mike Todd.

This Peregrina Pearl was a Valentine’s Day gift from Burton. It is thought to be one of the finest examples of a pear-shaped natural pear, weighing in at 55.95 carats. The stone was once owned by Queen Mary Tudor (right) and was made into a stunning necklace by Cartier.

Although Elizabeth Taylor is no longer with us, her exquisite jewelry collection is still here. What exactly will happen to her jewels is unknown. Will they be passed to her children or will they be auctioned off for her AIDS foundation or put into a museum? The question remains and so does her love for these jewels. In her book she says, “I’m fortunate to have some very important pieces of jewelry. I don’t believe I own any of the pieces. I believe that I am their custodian, here to enjoy them, to give them the best treatment in the world, to watch after their safety, and to love them.”

We’ll miss you Mrs. Taylor!

Happy National Chocolate Week!

This is the week where it’s okay to indulge in everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure: chocolate. Mix that with diamonds and you’ve just met your new obsession. The beautiful brown colored diamonds are hitting the scene from a lighter champagne hue to the very popular darker cognac color with tasteful names including cinnamon, caramel, and honey. Isn’t your mouth watering already?!

These diamonds are the new fashion trend in Hollywood. Stars like Cameron Diaz, Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lopez and Kristen Bell have all been seeing wearing them!

Since there are more mines in the world that produce chocolate diamonds, these pieces of jewelry are a bit less expensive than your regular white diamonds…so everyone can join in the fun!

The contrast between the chocolate diamonds and white diamonds are amazing – as seen with these beautiful brown diamond earrings.

This display of a meshed weave of brown and colorless diamonds reflects the natural brilliance of the chocolate diamonds in this one-of-a kind bracelet.

Chocolate diamonds can be found in necklaces, bracelets, and earrings and you can wear them anywhere in any fashion- from the Oscars to a day at work.  So, to celebrate National Chocolate Week, surprise your significant other with a unique sweet treat (without the calories!).
